Car Makers Ordered to Include New Recall Labels on Mailings, NHTSA Reports

If a part on your car is recalled by vehicle manufacturers, these companies are now required to include new, eye-catching labels on mailed to notices, according to a recent announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

New mandatory recall labels on mailings are intended to alert consumers to recalled vehicle equipment and, ideally, encourage them to take action right away.

New mandatory recall labels on mailings are intended to alert consumers to recalled vehicle equipment and, ideally, encourage them to take action right away.

These new mandatory recall labels have been required since the end of February 2014, and their purpose is to:

  • Catch consumers’ attention
  • Prevent people from mistaking them from junk mail
  • Motivate car owners to get the recalled equipment replaced (or take the appropriate action) so they are not at risk of experiencing equipment failure and/or car accidents.

Explaining this new mandate, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has stated that, “recalls only work if consumers are aware of them … this new label will allow consumers to quickly recognize recall notices mailed to their homes so they can act quickly to get their vehicles, child restraints, tires, or other motor vehicle equipment fixed.”

Copycats Beware…

The rollout of these new recall labels for mailings has been coupled with an announcement that marketers or others should not try to copy these labels. In fact, for those who do, there can be expensive fines or other legal actions levied against them.

This is because regulators do not want potential copycats to try to divert consumers’ focus away from important vehicle recall information, nor do they want the importance or potency of the labels to be diluted by marketing firms trying to deceptively capture consumers’ focus.

NHTSA Has Recall Apps Too

People who want to stay abreast of the latest vehicle recall news can now download an app released by the NHTSA. This app, which is free, will provide up-to-date information regarding vehicle equipment recalls. It also provides consumers with a quick, easy way to report any problems or issues they have had with certain vehicles and/or vehicle equipment defects.
