Car Seat Safety Tips from NHTSA Officials (Pt. 1)

Car seat safety is the focus of a new campaign rolled out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on September 19th. Known as the Don’t Delay. Register Your Child’s Car Seat Today, this campaign was initiated by NHTSA officials as a way to improve protections for children.

Anthony Foxx, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, explained this in a recent press release, stating, “Safety is our highest priority, and our new tool and registration campaign are two more ways we’re working to protect our most vulnerable passengers – our children.” Foxx went on to state that, “Parents and caregivers are the first line of defense by ensuring they are selecting the right car seat, registering it, and using it correctly for every trip.”

Choosing the best car seat for a child, based on the child’s size, is one of the car seat safety tips released as part of the NHTSA’s new car seat safety campaign.

As part of this NHTSA campaign, regulators released a number of car seat safety tips that can help parents maximize the protections for their children. Here’s a look at some of these NHTSA car seat safety tips:

  • Figure out the best car seat for your child – The NHTSA now has a Car Seat Finder Tool that parents can use to figure out what the safest car seat would be for their child, based on the kid’s height, weight and general size. This online tool can be accessed here, and parents are encouraged to choose the safest car seats for their children in order to offer them the most protections on the roads.
  • Register the car seat – Once parents have obtained the safest car seats for their children, the NHTSA is strongly urging them to register these car seats so that parents can kept informed if or when the manufacturer issues a recall on that car seat. In other words, by registering car seats with manufacturers, parents will be able to stay informed in the event that the manufacturer issues a recall on their car seat.
