12 Nov Drunk Driver Kills Two after Driving Wrong Way on Loop 202 in Tempe
Two people were killed by a drunk driver on the morning of Saturday November 9 when the intoxicated driver reportedly drove the wrong way on Loop 202 in Tempe. According to local law enforcement officials, this fatal car accident occurred at about 2:30 am, and the victims – a middle-aged couple from St. Johns – were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not reported whether the driver sustained any serious injuries in this accident, nor have they released any information regarding:
- The driver’s alleged blood alcohol content at the time of the accident
- Whether the driver has a history of drunk driving (i.e., has prior DUI convictions).
While the driver, 29-year-old Maikil Doud Schol, is currently facing various criminal charges (including charges of DUI and vehicular homicide), he may also be named as the defendant in a civil wrongful death lawsuit by the families of the victims of this accident. In fact, if the families of the couple who died in this accident choose to move forward with a wrongful death lawsuit, they could:
- Use a guilty verdict in the criminal case as damning evidence against the defendant in the civil case
- Obtain compensation for the costs associated with the funeral and burial costs for their loved one
- Secure compensation for their own tragic loss and mental anguish.
Although no amount of money will ever bring back a deceased loved one or be sufficient to compensate grieving families for such a profound loss, a wrongful death settlement can help provide these families with the compensation they need to financially get through such difficult and trying times.
