20 Dec Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents Decrease in 2013 to Historic 25-Yr Low, DOT Reports
From 2012 to 2013, there was a 3.1 percent decrease in the incidence of fatal motor vehicle accidents in the U.S., marking the lowest rate of fatal traffic accidents in the U.S. in nearly a decade. According to safety officials at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), in 2013:
32,719 people were killed in fatal motor vehicle accidents involving only passenger vehicles in the U.S.
- Fatalities associated with motorcycle accidents and large trucks decreased for the first time since 2009.
- Although fatal pedestrian accidents decreased by nearly 2 percent (with 4,735 of these fatal traffic accidents occurring in 2013), the incidence of these accidents was still about 15 percent higher than the record low in 2009 (when there were 4,109 recorded fatal pedestrian accidents).
- Fatal motor vehicle accidents involving distracted driving decreased about 6.7 percent, falling from 3,380 in 2012 to just over 3,150 in 2013. For injury-related distracted driving accidents, the incidence increased by about 1 percent in 2013 (when compared to 2012).
As U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has stated about these findings:
With the holidays upon us, I give thanks that more of our friends and family are with us this year because of the broad partnership of safety-driven individuals and organizations who have joined us in making our roads safer for everyone…Safety truly is a shared responsibility and we’ve all got more work to do in the New Year to keep more families together – that’s my resolution to the American people.
