31 Oct Have Fun, But Don’t Drink and Drive on Halloween, Warns the NHTSA
Happy Halloween, everyone! As you plan for this evening’s festivities, be sure to plan ahead to not drink and drive on Halloween night, officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are advising. In hoping that everyone can enjoy a fun and safe Halloween this year, the NHTSA has pointed out that drinking and driving on Halloween when a lot more pedestrians, including children, are out has led to high rates of fatalities in the past.
Specifically, in 2012, intoxicated motorists were responsible for killing about 50 percent of the people who died in fatal traffic accidents on Halloween night. Of all of these deaths caused by drunk drivers, about 28 percent of them involved pedestrians.
Here’s What to Do So You Don’t Drink and Drive on Halloween, Says the NHTSA
Rather than driving drunk on Halloween evening and increasing the risk of causing a fatal traffic accident, here’s what officials at the NHTSA are advising people to do if they do plan on drinking alcohol as part of their Halloween celebrations:
- Find a sober driver ahead of time. Whether this is a friend who promises to not drink and be the sober driver or this is a taxi driver or bus driver, make sure you trust a sober driver to get you home, rather than driving while intoxicated.
- Consider staying away from home for the evening. Making it home on Halloween may be more of a headache than you realize, especially if you’ve left the planning to the last minute. So, why not stay with a friend or get a motel or hotel room for the evening? Even if it ends up costing a few hundred dollars, these costs are nothing when compared to the costs of getting a DUI or killing someone in an accident.
- Celebrate at home and stay off of the roads if you’ll be drinking while celebrating Halloween.
