Parents Talk to Your Teens about 5 to Drive, NHTSA Urges (Pt. 1)

In conjunction with National Teen Driver Safety Week, officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are strongly encouraging the parents of teen drivers to talk these new motorists about 5 to Drive.

5 to Drive is an ongoing campaign sponsored by the NHTSA that outlines 5 specific points that parents should discuss with their teens when it comes to safety and responsible driving. As some NHTSA officials have explained, talking about these points can improve teens’ diligence behind the wheel, preventing accidents and saving lives every day.

Follow the speed limit always – Speeding is a completely preventable cause of car accidents, and tragically, last year nearly half of all fatal motor vehicle accidents caused by teenage drivers involved speeding.

  2. Put down your cellphones – While many states have cellphone bans in place for newly licensed drivers, there is no such ban existing in Arizona. Despite this, NHTSA officials are strongly urging parents to tell their teen drivers to put their cellphones down whenever they get behind the wheel.Cellphone use is the number one cause of distraction among teen drivers, and distracted driving is the cause of about 10 percent of all fatal motor vehicle accidents caused by teenage drivers.
