22 May Potential Suspect Who Ran Over Phoenix Cop Has Been Arrested
The owner of an SUV that hit and killed a Phoenix police officer this past Sunday evening is currently in custody as investigators try to determine whether the man was, in fact, driving the SUV at the time of the fatal hit-and-run accident. According to the preliminary police report associated with this case, the suspect has been arrested on drug possession charges when officers, who tracked down the man and questioned him about the fatal car accident, found cocaine on him. At that time, the man denied that he had been driving the vehicle when it struck and killed the Phoenix cop who had been on the side of the road investigating a DUI associated with another driver when he was killed.
While the suspect has stated that he was not the driver who killed the cop, police have definitely tied the man’s car to the fatal hit-and-run accident, as they matched pieces of the SUV that were left at the scene of the accident to the vehicle, and investigators have found that the damage to the SUV’s grill and hood are consistent with what would be expected from such a collision. Complicating the suspect’s denial of having hit the officer is the fact that, about an hour and a half after the accident, an off-duty cop witnessed the suspect driving his damaged SUV. At this time, investigators are asking any other potential witnesses who saw the SUV in the early morning hours of Sunday to contact them and make a statement.
Criminal Charges and a Wrongful Death Lawsuit
When investigators have enough evidence to pinpoint a suspect in this case, they will officially file criminal charges against the alleged driver who hit and killed the Phoenix cop. While the criminal case will seek a conviction to hold the driver responsible for his criminal actions, the family of the victim can seek compensation for their mental anguish and losses by pursuing a wrongful death case against the driver. Although no amount of money can ever compensate a family for the loss of a loved one, a wrongful death settlement can be essential to helping the family pay for funeral and burial costs during such tragic times.
