05 Aug The Most Dangerous Times & Days to Drive: When You Have the Greatest Risk of Being in a Collision
The average driver will be in roughly five car accidents over the course of a lifetime. For drivers who are on the roads at certain times, however, they may have a greater risk of an auto accident because there are simply more drivers – or more impaired motorists – on the roads.
It’s More Risky to Drive…
At night – Between the hours of 6 pm and midnight, motorists typically have the greatest risk of being in a traffic accident. This is because there are a lot more motorists on the road, particularly during rush hour when people are commuting home. It’s also due to the fact that there tends to be more impaired motorists on the roads, particularly as the evening hours get later.
- On Saturdays – In general, Saturday is the single day of the week when the most fatal traffic accidents occur – and when the most fatalities in relation to the number of vehicles on the road occur.
- In August – Historically, traffic accidents spike during the summer months, hitting their peak in August. August is also the month during which the most fatal traffic accidents occur (when compared to every other month in the year).
While this may be related to the surge in motorists on the road during August, it may also stem from the fact that there are a lot more other travelers on the road (i.e., pedestrians, motorcycle riders, etc.) and that the driving conditions tend to be more complicated during the summer (due to, for instance, more highway work crews being set up, etc.).
In contrast, motorists typically have the lowest risk being in an auto wreck between the hours of 4 am and 5 am on a Monday or Tuesday in January.
Reducing Your Risk of an Accident Any Time, Day or Month
Regardless of when you are on the road, there are some things you can do as a motorist to reduce your risk of being in an auto collision. Some of these things include:
- Only driving when you are sober and focused (rather than impaired or distracted).
- Always complying with traffic laws.
- Always driving defensively.
- Wearing your seatbelt.
